I decided to have some fun with the Soap Dish challenge, and design something that hit both the form and function while being incredibly easy to print - and I like how it turned out enough that I'm going to use this in my own home!

I started with some research into the different types of soap dishes, and objective listings of the ‘best’ in each category. In terms of type, self-draining and catchment dishes were both reviewed quite favorable - as they provided means of handling runoff. As not all sinks/washrooms are configured for a self-draining soap dish - I decided to go with a catchment design, to be useful for the most people.

In the ratings, I also saw a fairly consistent modern design trend for a ‘rib bone’ look. This achieves both a nice visual, and a way to ensure airflow around the soap so that it dries quickly and can have a longer life. The wave pattern of my model's platform is informed by this - using narrow ribs to allow for more surface area of the soap to be exposed to air.

Update: May 26, 2022

Printed my first version and it came out really well - photos of the print are now up! There are a few improvements I can make thought:

• I was intentionally liberal with the tolerances between the dish's ledge and the platform's outer dimensions to make sure it fit. I'm happy with the platform's dimensions, so now I'm going to dial-in the dish's dimensions for a much closer fit.
• I think I can improve the print-time of the dish so I may tweak some print settings to get it lower.

I'll update the models once these changes are made.

Update: May 2, 2022

The updated dish printed great - and the fit with the platform is now significantly better. I've left in a little slop so that it can be painted/sealed without making making the fit too tight. I've also shortened the dish a bit, and gotten the print time down by about 30%.
